Why Are DePuy ASR Hip Implants Being Recalled?
In April of 2010, DePuy received data from the British joint replacement registry which indicated that recipients of the ASL XR Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System were experiencing higher than expected failure rates. According to the Registry, as many as 1 in 8 patients (12-13%) who received a hip implant needed a corrective surgery, or "revision," within five years.
According to Kevin J. Bozic, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in California, the DePuy failure rate "appears to be about twice the industry average." Many DePuy hip implant recipients have experienced implant dislocation that can lead to fractures, as well as metallosis, which is a condition where the body reacts to metal fragments created by metal-on-metal ball and socket joints. Metallosis can lead to muscle, joint, ligament, nerve and bone damage.
On August 24, 2010, DePuy recalled the ASR hip devices -- after more than 93,000 were sold.
